Chefs who Share Young Chef Award 2016

Chefs who Share – The ART of giving, is for a second year is running the Chefs who Share Young Chef Award. 77 restaurants throughout South Africa have been invited to participate and Sunday the 24th of July sees the deadline for all entrants to submit their entries.

This year’s judging panel consists of Young Chef Award Ambassador Lentswe Bhengu (pictured above), Chef Jason Whitehead, Chef Tracey Younghusband, Silwood Kitchen Vice principal Carianne Wilkinson, Food 24 Manager and Food Editor Tessa Purdon, as well as myself.

The entrants aged between 18-29 years have been asked to prepare a canape’ to the value of R25.00 which will be judged on creativity, taste, uniqueness as well as aesthetics, but personality, conduct in the kitchen as well as the ability to work in a team will also be evaluated. The chefs who create the 7 best canapes’ will be flown to Johannesburg, accommodated, and will also be preparing their canapes’ to serve with champagne at the Chefs who Share gala dinner, which will be held at the Johannesburg City Hall on the 24th of September 2016. It is on this same evening that the recipient of the title ‘Chefs who Share Young Chef Award 2016’ will be announced. The final decision as to who will ultimately win will be made by Chef Reto Mathis (Swiss International Airlines ambassador), Lentswe Bhengu, as well as the 14 senior chefs who are participating in the gala.

The winner of the #CWSYCA2016 will be flown to Europe, courtesy of Swiss International Airlines, where they will get to work in a Michelin Star restaurant. They will also get to visit France, namely the headquarters of Moet et Chandon in Esperay where they will get to experience some of the culinary highlights of the country. It is a prize that is invaluable for any young chef and an incredible launchpad into their career in food.

Chefs who share – the ART of Giving, was conceptualised by Barbara Lenhard and Florian Gast three years ago and has to date raised R6.1 million for charity. Top chefs from South Africa as well as international chefs work in teams of two to create the meals to be served at the gala dinner. Each team develops a special menu for 36 guests, with the total number of guests amounting to 252. The seven Young Chef Award finalists will each work with a chef team at the Gala Dinner. Tickets are sold at R3000.00 per person, and sales of these plus the money raised at the art auction is then donated to worthy causes.

It is an event that is all about celebrating food and the incredibly talented chefs in South Africa, it is also a celebration of art, but more so it is an incredible event that is all about giving back to those that are less fortunate.
