Swiss owned Stellenbosch Wine Estate, Eikendal, recently launched a new Pizza & Wine Pairing experience that is set to satisfy both pizza loving and wine enthusiasts alike. This rather unusual pairing tasting is set to attract many to this popular Winelands hotspot which is situated between Stellenbosch and Somerset West.

Eikendal is renowned for its elegant wines and bite-size pizzas are each carefully selected to match with these.

Freshly prepared by the Cucina di Giovanni restaurant, situated on the farm, these mini, thin-crusted pizza’s are set to please both meat lovers and vegetarians alike, as they will be prepared according to preference.

The meat option kicks off with a Chicken & Pineapple combo paired with the newly released Eikendal Sauvignon Blanc. The tropical notes of the Sauvignon Blanc complement the sweet and sour pizza exceptionally well.
Next on offer is an earthy Ham & Mushroom pizza complimented by the estate’s unwooded Chardonnay, Janina 2014, which pairs prefectly.
Lastly the Eikendal Merlot Rosé 2015 with its bright, fresh floral and fruity taste profile, is matched with a Brie & Cranberry pizza to end your tasting on a refreshing note.

Vegetarians are treated to a trio too, which starts with a Peppers & Pineapple pizza paired with the Sauvignon Blanc 2015. The unwooded Chardonnay then works its magic with a Mushroom & Olives pizza and last but not least the Rose’is paired as the above for meat lovers, with the Brie and Cranberry option.

Eikendal winemaker Nico Grobler says – “Wine with pizza is like beer with fish and chips…it is just meant to be. With these summer taste sensations we invite visitors to come and linger a little longer in our tasting room with these laid-back tastings. Or why not make a day of it and join a cool crowd on the lawn at the water’s edge,”

“Our new Pizza & Wine Pairings are perfect for a midday pick-me-up palate pleaser or when you need to discuss a business idea or get that contract signed over a quick bite or two,” adds Nico.

Eikendal also caters for the kids by offering a fun grape juice tasting. There are wildlife images to colour in, courtesy of the Cheetah Outreach, or they can play on the jungle gym on the spacious lawn area.

Leisure activities on the farm range from wine tastings and long lunches to wildlife viewings and cellar tours. There is also fly fishing on offer at one of the glistening dams or set off on a fynbos hike before settling in for an overnight stay at the charming Eikendal Lodge. Perfect for a breakaway to suit all types.

The Eikendal Pizza & Wine Pairings are on offer from Tuesdays to Sundays, between 12h00 and 16h00 and cost R40.00 per person, the kids’ juice tasting will set you back R20.00 per child. Pre-bookings for the pairings are essential as daily orders are limited.
